The Auschwitz tour from Brno is planned around your visit time at the Museum. Once a slot is secured, your pickup time is set to match it. At the Memorial, a local guide takes you through the two main parts of the former German Nazi concentration and extermination camp for up to three and a half hours. You spend around two hours in Auschwitz I, with its preserved brick blocks and exhibitions, and around an hour and a half at Auschwitz II-Birkenau, the vast site of the railway ramp, barracks and ruined gas chambers. Entrance tickets are reserved in advance, and there is some free time before the return journey.
The guide explains the history of the camp from its opening in 1940 to its liberation in January 1945, and who suffered there. The great majority of the victims were Jews; Poles, Roma and Sinti, Soviet prisoners of war and people of other nationalities were also imprisoned and killed. The visit begins in the main camp, which the Germans set up in 1940 in former Polish army barracks near Oświęcim. You walk through the gate bearing the words “Arbeit macht frei” and into the brick blocks, where exhibitions show what happened to the people deported to Auschwitz, including the belongings taken from them. The route also leads to Block 11, the camp prison, and the Death Wall. - To Birkenau
Auschwitz II-Birkenau is about 3 km from the main camp. Moving between the two sites is part of the guided visit. - Auschwitz II-Birkenau (around 1.5 hours)
Birkenau was the largest part of the complex and the main place of the murder of European Jews. You follow the railway unloading ramp, see the wooden and brick barracks, and reach the ruins of the gas chambers and crematoria that the SS blew up before liberation.
