Description

An Auschwitz study tour goes further than a standard guided visit. It is designed for those who want to study the history of the former German Nazi concentration and extermination camp in depth. Instead of an overview of the two main sites, the programme gives more time to specific places and topics, with particular attention to the sites connected with the mass murder of Jews. Study visits are available as one-day or two-day programmes, in English and other languages, for groups and individual travellers.

Alongside the guided visit at the Auschwitz-Birkenau Memorial and Museum, study visits can include selected educational classes such as lectures, seminars and talks on the Second World War, Auschwitz and the Holocaust. Lectures examine particular aspects of how the camp operated, using archival documents, photographs, objects and post-camp buildings. Workshops are based on source materials, and participants study surviving archive documents to follow the fates of individual prisoners. The programme may also include screenings of documentary and feature films.

The guide introduces participants to the history of Auschwitz and to the camp structures that have survived. Auschwitz was established by the Germans in 1940 and became the largest of their camps, operating until liberation on 27 January 1945. Most of its victims were Jews; Poles, Roma and Sinti, Soviet prisoners of war and people of other nationalities were also imprisoned and murdered there. A study tour gives the time to examine this history carefully and with the seriousness the Memorial requires.

Auschwitz Study Tour Itinerary

One-day study tour (approx. 6 hours)

1. Private transfer to the Memorial
   Your group travels to the Auschwitz-Birkenau Memorial in a private, air-conditioned vehicle, with an English-speaking driver assisting throughout the tour. Exact timings are confirmed by email before the visit.
2. Arrival and introduction
   Entrance tickets to Auschwitz I and Auschwitz II-Birkenau are arranged in advance. Your licensed guide meets the group, and each participant receives headphones for the visit. Tickets are issued by name, so everyone needs a passport or ID card.
3. Auschwitz I
   The guided study visit covers the main camp, set up in 1940 in former Polish army barracks, with its “Arbeit macht frei” gate, preserved brick blocks, Block 11 and the Death Wall. The guide explains the history of the site and the relics that remain.
4. Auschwitz II-Birkenau, sites of mass murder
   The longer part of the day is spent at Birkenau, about 3 km away, with special emphasis on places connected with the mass murder of Jews. These include the ruins of gas chambers and crematoria IV and V, the “Kanada” storage area, the “Sauna” building and Bunker No. 2.
5. Return transfer
   After up to six hours of guided time inside the camps, the private vehicle takes the group back.

Two-day study tour (approx. 8 hours each day)

Day 1 – Auschwitz I

1. Private transfer and arrival
   The group travels to the Memorial by private vehicle and meets the guide at the Main Camp.
2. Permanent exhibition
   The first day is devoted to Auschwitz I, beginning with a guided tour of the permanent exhibition in the preserved brick blocks.
3. National exhibitions and selected sites
   The visit continues with selected national exhibitions and other sites in the Main Camp, giving more time than a standard visit to individual blocks and topics.

Day 2 – Auschwitz II-Birkenau

4. Living conditions in Birkenau
   The second day covers the entire area of Auschwitz II-Birkenau. It starts with the living conditions in the camp, including the wooden and brick living barracks and the sanitary barracks.
5. Sites of mass murder
   The guide then leads the group to selected sites connected with the mass murder of Jews: the railway unloading ramp and the ruins of the gas chambers and crematoria, blown up by the SS before liberation.
6. Return transfer
   At the end of the day, the private vehicle takes the group back.

Before you go

• Plan well in advance: Guided visits at the Memorial are often booked out weeks ahead, especially from spring to autumn. Study programmes need extra preparation, so contact us as early as possible.
• ID for every participant: Tickets are issued by name, so each person must bring a passport or ID card.
• Small bags only: Bags inside the Museum must not exceed 30 x 20 x 10 cm.
• Age guidance: The Museum does not recommend visits for children under 14.
• Dress for long hours outdoors: Study visits involve several hours of walking, much of it outdoors at Birkenau. Wear comfortable shoes and weather-appropriate clothing.
